Media Usage in Post-Secondary Education and Implications for Teaching and Learning

The Web 2.0 has permeated academic life. The use of online information services in post-secondary education has led to dramatic changes in faculty teaching methods as well as in the learning and study behavior of students. At the same time, traditional information media, such as textbooks and printed handouts, still form the basic pillars of teaching and learning. This paper reports the results of a survey about media usage in teaching and learning conducted with Western University students and instructors, highlighting trends in the usage of new and traditional media in higher education by instructors and students. In addition, the survey comprises part of an international research program in which 20 universities from 10 countries are currently participating. Further, the study will hopefully become a part of the ongoing discussion of practices and policies that purport to advance the effective use of media in teaching and learning

E-Portfolios, die digitale Form von Portfolios, bieten einen neuen Ansatz, um das Konzept des klassischen Portfolios wieder aufleben zu lassen. Durch das Einbinden unterschiedlicher Dateiformate wie Bild-, Audio-, Video-, PDF- und Office-Dateien, werden digitale Sammelmappen zu einer persönlichen Website-ähnlichen Struktur aufgebaut. Die Inhalte können beliebig ausgetauscht, ergänzt oder umgeordnet und dem Anlass entsprechend präsentiert werden. Dies dient dem Nutzer zur Reflexion bestimmter Sachverhalte und ermöglicht eine strukturierte Auseinandersetzung mit ausgewählten Themen. Vor diesem Hintergrund wurde ein E-Portfolio-System im Rahmen einer wissenschaftlichen Weiterbildung für Lehrerinnen und Lehrer in Baden-Württemberg eingesetzt. International Comparison of Media Usage among University Students

A survey on media usage was conducted at Western University, followed by similar surveys in Germany, Spain and Thailand. It seems that the usage of IT-devices is more popular in Thailand and Germany than in Canada. The use of social network related applications in academia seems to be more common in Thailand compared to Canada and Germany. The competitiveness of the Internet-based market of academic education might be more intensive in Canada because of the proximity of the U.S. market. An international comparison is, nevertheless, problematic, because the circumstances are really diverse and in constant change. Future plans involve conducting a comparative global media survey in the area of higher education

Jüngste Entwicklungen im Medienbereich, oft umschrieben mit dem Begriff "Web 2.0", führten zu tiefgreifenden Veränderungen in Studium. Die empirische Untersuchung beschreibt die Nutzung von 43 verschiedenen Medienangeboten (Web 2.0-Dienste, Printmedien und E-Learning-Angebote) durch 1.500 Studierende. Are students satisfied with media: a Canadian case study

The article presents partial results of a survey about media usage habits for studying and learning conducted in 2013 at Western University, a large Canadian university. The article focuses on students’ frequency of use and satisfaction with media for studying and learning. The results of this study support the assumption that student’s media usage includes a mixture of traditional and new media. The main traditional media continue to play an important role in the students’ academic life, and some new media have emerged as seemingly on equal footing or even more important than the traditional forms of media. The use of some media can be stated as almost compulsory, especially the use of Google search; that is on the highest rank of frequency of use as well as one of the highest satisfaction values with the usage. The use of Facebook and YouTube shows very high values of usage frequency, so this might also be stated as a habit

This article explains the preliminary results of a survey about media usage in teaching and learning conducted with Western University faculty and students, highlighting trends for the usage of new and traditional media in higher education. Furthermore, the article intends to participate in the ongoing discussion of practices and policies that purport to advance the effective use of media in teaching and learning

Media Usage Survey: Overall Comparison of Faculty and Students

Recent developments in the use of technologies in education have provided unique opportunities for teaching and learning. This paper describes the results of a survey conducted at Western University (Canada) in 2013, regarding the use of media by students and instructors. The results of this study support the assumption that the media usage of students and instructors include a mixture of traditional and new media. The main traditional media continue to be important, and some new media have emerged as seemingly on equal footing or even more important than the traditional forms of media. Some new media that have recently been in the public spotlight do not seem to be as important as expected. These new media may still be emerging but it is not possible to know their ultimate importance at this point. There was some variation in media usage across different Faculties but perhaps not as much variation as might have been expected
